• When Does Stomach Pain Warrant a Trip to Urgent Care?

    on Apr 15th, 2019

A pain, an ache, a cramp. These are common descriptions for stomach discomfort, and they can range from mild to debilitating.

Sometimes you’re able to recognize the causes of stomach pain and treat them at home, such as menstrual cramps, gas, or constipation. But at other times, you realize that you can’t treat the cause of your discomfort without help, or you don’t know the cause at all. Understandably, this can be concerning.

At Rose City Urgent Care’s four locations in and around Portland, Oregon, our urgent care specialists can help diagnose and treat many of the common causes of stomach pain. Here’s how to know whether your stomach pain warrants a visit to one of our clinics.

Pain that is not a medical emergency

It’s important to remember that if you’re experiencing a true medical emergency, you should dial 911.

Stomach pain can indicate a serious medical condition that needs immediate attention. Call emergency services if your abdominal pain is associated with:

It’s possible that other causes of severe stomach pain also need advanced care. Always trust your instincts and go to an emergency room if you think it’s necessary.

Our services are most appropriate if you need prompt, but not emergency, attention for your stomach pain.

Pain with an unknown cause

Any time you have pain but don’t know the cause, you may feel anxious or nervous about your condition and want prompt treatment or answers. If you can’t attribute your pain to a source like gas, indigestion, constipation, or menstrual cramps, which are often mild concerns you can treat on your own, then it’s appropriate to seek urgent care.

We conduct a thorough medical examination and ask questions that help us to diagnose the underlying cause of your stomach pain. We may ask you:

These questions can also help us determine if you need a referral for specialized care or if you need more immediate medical attention than we can provide.

Ultimately, we can provide you with a treatment for your condition, answers to any questions you have, or recommendations for further medical attention if needed.

Pain due to familiar conditions you can’t treat on your own

Some common causes of stomach pain are conditions we treat regularly at Rose City Urgent Care.

Urinary tract infections

If you have a urinary tract infection (UTI), it’s not uncommon to experience stomach discomfort. Depending on whether the infection is in your kidneys, bladder, or urethra, the pain could present as pelvic pressure, lower abdominal pain, or even as nausea or vomiting.

Many women who have frequent UTIs recognize the symptoms, and seek immediate care to alleviate them. In this case, your pain warrants a trip to urgent care so we can quickly diagnose and treat the infection and your discomfort.

Minor stomach ailments

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are common stomach concerns and are usually accompanied by pain and cramping in your abdominal region.

Typically these are symptoms of viral gastroenteritis, more frequently known as the stomach flu, but they could also be signs of a bacterial or parasitic infection or other conditions.

If these symptoms have lasted for a couple days, if you’re worried about possible complications, or if you just need some expert advice, this also warrants a trip to urgent care. Here’s how we’ll be able to help you:
